Blue Demons advance to next week's best-of-three series in CBI finals
CHICAGO - DePaul and Coastal Carolina traded the lead 13 times Wednesday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena, but the Blue Demons got the final say as Max Strus and Paul Reed finished with 24 points apiece to lead DePaul to a 92-87 win. The victory advances the Blue Demons to next week's best-of-three final series in the Roman College Basketball Invitational.
Â
Reed added four rebounds and three blocks to his 24 points while Strus chipped in seven rebounds and two assists. Femi Olujobi added 18 points and a game-high eight rebounds and Eli Cain finished with 12 points and five rebounds.
Â
DePaul (18-15) made 22-of-23 foul shots in the game, including 18-for-18 in the second half, while also enjoying a plus-12 advantage on the glass. On the game DePaul shot .589 (33-56) from the field.
Â
Five quick points from Cain got the Blue Demons started Wednesday evening as the Blue Demons took a 7-4 advantage less than three minutes into the action.
Â
The two teams went back and forth over much of the first 10 minutes and with 11:29 left in the opening half, Strus finished through contact for an old fashioned three-point play, to put DePaul in front 17-15. Two and a half minutes later a media timeout stopped play with Coastal Carolina leading 25-24 as the two teams to that point had traded the lead eight times in the opening dozen minutes.
Â
Down the stretch of the first half, neither team was able to create much room as Coastal Carolina went into the intermission leading 38-36.
Â
Out of the break, DePaul quickly regained the lead as Strus shook a Coastal Carolina defender with a cross over and then got to the rim for a three-point play. Then, just a minute later, Strus found Reed in transition for an alley-oop that brought the house down as McGrath-Phillips Arena grew as loud as it has at any point in the CBI.
Â
The Chanticleers would stick around, knocking down a trio of three-pointers to move in front 57-56, but the visitor's lead was short lived. With 6:39 to play in the game, DePaul opened up its first double-digit lead of the game at 80-69.
Â
From that point on DePaul would not relinquish its lead. Coastal Carolina would cut the Blue Demon advantage to four points with 50 seconds left, but that was as close as the Chanticleers would get as DePaul held on for the 92-87 win.
Zac Cuthbertson led Coastal Carolina (17-17) with 21 points while DeVante' Jones added 16 with seven assists.
Â
DePaul returns to action on Monday as they travel to either Loyola Marymount or South Florida. The two teams play a semifinal game on Thursday night in Tampa. Game two and game three (if necessary) will be played at McGrath-Phillips Arena on Wednesday and Friday.
