The Blue Demons concluded a successful outdoor season with four conference accolades, 25 podium finishes
NEW YORK – In a finish that mirrors last season's championships, the DePaul women's track & field team placed second and the men finished in third at the 2019 BIG EAST Outdoor Track and Field Championships presented by Jeep. The two teams combined for 10 championship titles and four conference accolades to conclude the two-day meet held at the Ichan Stadium on Randall's Island.
Senior Jade Nolan was named the Women's Most Outstanding Field Performer, credited to her first-place performances in the long jump and triple jump. On the first day of competition, the Milwaukee native marked a 5.90-meter long jump to take the crown and match her PR. Nolan brought home the title for DePaul for the first time since 2015. She continued her success in the triple jump with a dominating 12.38-meter finish that beat her own school record.
Earning the Men's Most Outstanding Track Performer title was sophomore Brendan van Voorhis. The Keizer, Ore. native earned the top spot in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.98. Van Voorhis placed second in the 400-meter dash (47.88 PR), preceded by fellow Blue Demon Henry Larkin. He was also part of both the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay races that earned gold at the league competition.
The individual point totals for van Voorhis and Nolan earned the duo the High Point Performer awards. Nolan shared the title with Leah Anderson of St. John's while van Voorhis shared the accolade with Marquette's Terrance Howard.
The first day of competition saw Nolan and Rebecca Chouinard crowned individual champions in the long jump and hammer throw, respectively. Eight more Blue Demons topped the podium on the second-and-final day of competition including senior Alexia Brooks in the 100-meter hurdles. Brooks finished with a 13.70 time to contribute to the women's team's final point total.
On the men's side, 12 Blue Demons stood atop the podium to receive their conference hardware, led by van Voorhis, Adam Nelson & Henry Larkin on the track and Kyle Hedge on the field.
Coming from behind to take the crown in the men's 4x400-meter relay was a standout performance by Larkin. The freshman edged out Georgetown and Villanova to bring the relay team (Isaac Walker, van Voorhis, Kolani Cole, Larkin) to victory.
The Oakland native led a Blue Demon podium sweep in the 400-meter dash. His time of 47.64 was closely followed by van Voorhis who clocked in a time of 47.88 and Isaac Walker whose 48.78 finish completed the sweep.
The men's 4x100-meter relay team of van Voorhis, Tony Pavloski, Walker and Adam Nelson also garnered the top spot in what was their first race as a relay team in the 4x100.
Continuing success on the track for the men's squad was junior Adam Nelson in the 100-meter dash. After earning the top spot in the preliminary rounds (10.81), Nelson clocked in a gold-medal-winning 10.69 finish.
In the field, Kyle Hedge won his third-straight BIG EAST title in the shot put competition. The senior launched a season-best 16.20-meter finish to take home gold. He was joined on the podium by fellow thrower Alex Murray who finished with a 15.86-meter finish to set a new PR and bring home hardware.
