DePaul Falls to JMU in Game One of Ann Arbor Regional

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Blue Demons captured the first lead of the contest but fell 5-2 in game one of Ann Arbor Regional play against James Madison. DePaul's record drops to 34-15 on the season, while the Dukes improve to 48-7.Â
After three quiet innings, the Blue Demons were the first to strike. Maranda Gutierrez singled and reached second on an error from the JMU third baseman. Jessica Cothern then bunted and was replaced on first by pinch runner Madison Fisher. Gutierrez advanced to third on the hit. Morgan Greenwood reached first on a fielder's choice that found Fisher out at second, scoring Gutierrez for the first run of the game.
DePaul's momentum would rub off on the Dukes as they responded with a solo home run to knot the score in the bottom half of the inning.
The Dukes would grab the lead on a two-run blast in the bottom of the fifth to open a difference of 3-1 and enforce a DePaul pitching change. Natalie Halvorson entered the circle for the Blue Demons with zero outs in the inning.
The lengthy fifth inning continued to extend as James Madison grew its lead to four runs.
Just as it appeared that DePaul was going to retire in order in the top of the sixth, Greenwood launched a solo bomb, the first home run from a DePaul hitter in the contest, to make it a three-run game.
Blue Demon batters went down in order for the final three outs of the game. the Blue Demons will play the loser of tonight's Michigan versus Saint Francis game tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. CT.Â
