Blue Demons face Hawkeyes in annual BIG EAST-Big 10 series
CHICAGO – The matchups for the Gavitt Tipoff Games between programs in the BIG EAST and Big Ten conferences have been finalized with the Blue Demons traveling to Iowa in the opening night of the event. Eight games between the two conferences are scheduled from Nov. 11-14.
DePaul and Iowa meet for the just the fourth time and the first since a first round NIT matchup in 1995 in Moline, Ill. That game saw the Hawkeyes post a 96-87 win over the Blue Demons. The Hawkeyes also won the first meeting in the Chicago Armory, 34-29, on Dec. 19, 1938. DePaul's win in the three meetings was a 73-72 overtime decision on Dec. 28, 1956 at the Dixie Classic in Raleigh, N.C.
The Gavitt Tipoff Games is a unique early-season series played between the two conferences and named in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary. Game times will be announced at a later date. All games will be televised on FS1 or BTN.
DePaul's trip to Iowa marks the fifth appearance in the event for the Blue Demons. DePaul dropped games at Penn State (68-62 in 2015), against Rutgers (66-59 in 2016) and at Illinois (82-73 in 2017) before defeating Penn State, 72-70, in overtime last season at Wintrust Arena.
Following the opener of the 2019 series between the Blue Demons and Hawkeyes, the schedule continues on Tuesday, Nov. 12 as each conference has a home game with Minnesota traveling to Butler and Creighton playing at Michigan.
The slate for Wednesday, Nov. 13, is the busiest of the week, with three games including two at Big Ten sites. Ohio State hosts Villanova, Northwestern hosts Providence and Purdue plays at Marquette.
The Gavitt Tipoff Games conclude on Thursday, Nov. 14, with both BIG EAST teams at home. Seton Hall hosts Michigan State and Georgetown takes on visiting Penn State.
