Callipari Lifts DePaul over Western Michigan in Overtime
9/6/2019 6:34:00 PM | MEN'S SOCCER
CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer defeated Western Michigan 1-0 in overtime on Friday during their first road trip of the season. This gives the Blue Demons a 2-0 winning streak over the Broncos.
The Blue Demon back line proved to be key to DePaul's success Friday, consistently fending off the Bronco offensive onslaught. Western Michigan would outnumber DePaul 11-4 in both shots and corner kicks but one play by the Blue Demons in overtime proved to be the difference.
Senior Max de Bruijne took a free kick and placed it in just the right spot for Bronco keeper Isaac Walker's save to rebound directly towards Brayden Callipari who hammered one home to lift DePaul to a 1-0 win. de Bruijne would earn an assist on the play.
DePaul goalkeeper Drew Nuelle tallied five saves against the Broncos. Max de Bruijne and Jake Fuderer each added a shot.
FROM COACH PLOTKIN
On the overall match...
"Our guys just dug in and we told them it just takes one play inside the 18 and Max stepped up and made a big play to put it on frame. Brayden crashed and that's all she wrote. Credit to Chad - those guys are a handful. They were all over us, suffocating us the entire game - they are so good. But I was proud of our guys for just hanging on holding tough and just giving us a chance."
On the team's defensive performance...
"At the end of the second half, I was absolutely thrilled with what we did. We just talked about grinding away and picking up second balls and trying to make it difficult on them....never giving in and never giving up. That's who we are."
On looking towards Drake...
"Just build off of the success of this one and be ready for another battle with Drake."
