Men's tennis commences dual-match season with a 7-0 triumph over UIC
CHICAGO – Nothing exemplified DePaul's grit and resolve quite like Tamas Zador's inspiring performance Saturday night at No. 3 singles.
In the opener of the dual-match season, Zador's 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-6 victory over UIC's Niko Wasilewicz ignited a resounding 7-0 triumph over the Flames at Lakeshore Sport & Fitness.
Zador was on the brink of defeat having lost the first set and trailing 5-4 in the second set. That's when the senior from Budapest fought off being down in three match points and rallied to snatch the second set in a tiebreaker. Riding the momentum, Zador won the match in the super tiebreaker.
"Our seniors led the way tonight with all of them making big contributions to a hard-fought win over a quality UIC team," said coach Matt Brothers. "Everyone on our team played great tennis and showed good composure.
"Tamas and Vito Tonejc started the momentum getting the doubles win at No. 3 over Pelle Strandberg and Luiz Dos Santos. Then Vito went on to dominate at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-4 over Johan Hedstrom) and was the first singles court to finish giving us a quick 2-0 lead."
Luuk Wassenaar and Tripp Tuff clinched the doubles point after vanquishing Wasilewicz and Wale 6-2. Boris Spanjaard topped Kasper Parlklo 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Christopher Casati did likewise with a 6-4. 6-2 decision over Anthony Nguyen at No. 4.
Tuff and Wassenaar made it a clean sweep with Tuff taking down Strandberg 6-2, 6-4 and Wassenaar winning 6-2, 6-2 over Dos Santos.
Brothers & Co. are headed for a big test in the early season Friday when they venture to Madison, Wis. to face the Badgers at the outset of a grueling stretch with 12 consecutive matches away from Lincoln Park.
