Blue Demons finish first half of BIG EAST season Sunday vs. Georgetown
CHICAGO – Sunday's 2 p.m. matinee against Georgetown marks the halfway point of the BIG EAST season as coach Doug Bruno and his Blue Demons shoot for their 10th win in a row.
So far, so good.
No. 11/12 DePaul (18-2) has gone unscathed through the first eight games of conference action and is ready to delight the McGrath-Phillips Arena partisans with its fast-paced, share-it-or-shoot it offense that is averaging 86 points a game---fourth highest in the country.
The action is equally intense at the other end of the court as the Blue Demon full-court press headed by defensive stopper Chante Stonewall is forcing opponents into nearly 23 turnovers a game. Only three teams all season have finished with less than 20 turnovers.
What's been transpiring in recent weeks is the realization that this could indeed be a special season. DePaul's depth offensively has four primary scorers averaging in double figures with any one of Stonewall (17.5 points a game), Sonya Morris (17 points), Lexi Held (14.7 points) or Deja Church (10.9 points) fully capable of taking over a game.
It's revealing that when top player Stonewall scores seven points under her average as she did Friday night against Villanova that the Blue Demons still won by 16 points.
That's the way it's been. When any one or two of the primary scorers experiences an off night, there's plenty of offensive firepower to pick up the slack.
It promises to get even better as you watch Deja Church have more impact with each game as the talented junior guard adjusts to the "DePaulball" style of play after transferring from Michigan.
The straw that stirs this potent mixture is naturally comfortable working behind the scenes and doing all the little things that produce a big-time winner. Kelly Campbell is the ultimate pass-first point guard who cares more about assists and rebounds than points and headlines. Putting her teammates in the best position to succeed is what makes her day.
What would make Bruno's day on Sunday is for his players to come out with a similar intensity and energy level they displayed against Villanova.
Georgetown (4-15, 1-7) has been struggling this season and will enter the Sullivan Athletic Center in the midst of a six-game losing streak. The Hoyas are coming off Friday's 73-51 setback at Marquette after being outscored 18-5 in the fourth quarter.
Taylor Barnes is their leading scorer at 12.3 points a game and Marvellous Osagie-Erese is scoring 10 points a game. The 6-foot, 3-inch Anita Kelava leads the team with 7.5 rebounds per game and the senior who played on the U20 Croatian National Team has 32 blocked shots.
