Reed becomes the 20th player in program history to be selected in first two rounds of NBA Draft
CHICAGO – DePaul's Paul Reed became the first Blue Demon since 2007 to be selected in the NBA Draft as the Philadelphia 76ers picked him in the second round (58th overall) on Wednesday night. Reed becomes the 54th NBA draft pick for the program since 1947 and the 20th DePaul player to be selected in the first or second round.
Over his three seasons in Lincoln Park, Reed played in 93 career games with 57 starts. He totaled 47 games in double figures, 33 games with at least 10 rebounds, 27 double-doubles while averaging 10.6 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per game.
He finished his career ranked among DePaul's all-time leaders in blocked shots (3rd – 142), field goal percentage (9th – .535), rebounds (17th – 701), rebounds per game (t19th – 7.5), steals (27th – 109) and points (55th – 983). Reed was a 2020 second team All-BIG EAST honoree, the 2019 BIG EAST Most Improved Player and a two-time member of the BIG EAST All-Academic Team.
After a breakout sophomore campaign that led to BIG EAST Most Improved Player honors, Reed continued the upward trajectory last season with 18 double-doubles with four other games of 10-plus points and nine rebounds. He averaged a double-double with 15.1 points and 10.7 rebounds per outing en route to his second team all-league recognition.
Reed is the first Blue Demon to be drafted since 2007 when Wilson Chandler and Sammy Mejia were selected. Chandler was the 23rd overall pick by the New York Knicks while Mejia was the 27th pick of the second round (57th overall). Chandler played for the Brooklyn Nets last season in his 12th year in the league while Mejia recently retired from professional basketball following an 11-year career in Europe.
He is the third DePaul player to be selected by the 76ers joining Kevin Holmes in the fifth round in 1986 and Ron Norwood in the third round in 1976. The first NBA draft picks in program history in 1947 were Jack Walton to the Pittsburgh Ironmen, Gene Stump to the Boston Celtics and the Baltimore Bullets selected Elmer Gainer.
