Chicago native scored nearly 1,000 points in two seasons at Valparaiso
CHICAGO – DePaul transfer Javon Freeman-Liberty has been granted an NCAA waiver to be immediately eligible for competition starting with the 2020-21 season. The 6-4 guard transferred to DePaul in May after an impressive two seasons at Valparaiso from 2018-20.
"Javon has already proven to be a high-level college player in his first two seasons," said head coach Dave Leitao. "He brings a presence on both ends of the floor with an explosive offensive game while also being able to guard multiple positions on the defensive end of the floor. This is news Javon and his family have been waiting on and we're thrilled for them that he can play right away this season. We want to thank our compliance staff and administration along with the NCAA for all of their hard work on behalf of Javon."
Freeman-Liberty scored nearly 1,000 points over two seasons at Valparaiso as he totaled 992 points during his freshman and sophomore campaigns. He averaged 15.0 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.0 steals per game in 66 games for the Crusaders.
A season ago, he picked up NABC All-District First Team, All-Missouri Valley First Team, MVC All-Defensive Team, MVC Most Improved Team and MVC All-Tournament Team honors. The Chicago native averaged 19.0 points, 6.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.2 steals per game for the Crusaders and totaled 31 games in double figures that included 15 games of at least 20 points. Freeman-Liberty also totaled a Valparaiso-record 74 steals and his 628 total points marked just the second occurrence since 1970 of a Valparaiso player scoring at least 620 points in a season.
As a freshman, he became the first player since 2001 in the Missouri Valley Conference to be named to the All-Freshman and All-Defensive Teams in the same season. Freeman-Liberty averaged 11.0 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.8 steals in 31.2 minutes per game with 17 double-digit scoring efforts on the season.
At Chicago's Whitney Young High School, he led the Dolphins to back-to-back appearances in the Illinois Class 4A state championship game including a state title in 2017 as a junior and averaged nearly 20 points and six rebounds per game as a senior. Ranked as a consensus top-10 player in Illinois, he finished fifth in voting for Mr. Basketball in the state of Illinois.
