CHICAGO – The two words "first time" will be used somewhat frequently to describe the action Saturday in No. 24/23 DePaul's BIG EAST Conference opener against Georgetown at Wintrust Arena.
First of all (here we go), it will be the first time since March 16 of 2016 the Blue Demons' equanimity will be tested after a rousing success. That's when coach Doug Bruno had to keep his team level-headed for its NCAA Sweet 16 appearance after knocking off No. 8/8 Louisville in the NCAA Second Round.
This time, DePaul players have to stash away Wednesday's exhilarating 86-82 triumph over No. 9/9 Kentucky into their collective memory vault and sidestep a potential letdown against the Hoyas.
It will also be the first time DePaul fans will access the BIG EAST Digital Network live stream through a new streaming service, FloSports.
Finally, Saturday will be the first time Georgetown has played a game this season with its first seven postponed or canceled because of COVID-19 protocols.
Advance scout and Blue Demon assistant coach Lisa Ryckbosch had the unenviable task of preparing a game plan, strategies and mapping out tendencies of an opponent without any film or stats.
To make matters worse, the Hoyas have undergone significant turnover with seven new players---three transfers and four freshmen. One of coach James Howard's few returning mainstays from last season 6-foot, 2-inch Anita Kelava from Croatia, is unavailable while resolving a visa issue.
Suffice to say, Bruno & Co. may be better served focusing on executing what they do best and letting everything else take care of itself.
The most notable difference in the Kentucky game was the "all-guards-all-the-time" attack of Sonya Morris (19.8 points a game), Lexi Held (15.8 points), Dee Bekelja (15.4 points), Deja Church (14.4 points) and freshman Darrione Rogers (11.8 points) not settling for three-pointers and instead attacking the rim or knocking down an open two-point attempt.
Crunch the numbers and the Blue Demons' starting five is averaging a combined 77.2 points per game. Throw in the contributions of versatile freshman guard Kendall Holmes, emerging inside player 6-foot, 1-inch Kayla Caudle plus steady junior Jolene Daninger and you can see why this team is averaging 91.2 points.
Georgetown figures to be led by Kelava when she returns along with 6-2 USC transfer Jillian Archer, 6-3 Graceann Bennett, 6-2 Princeton transfer Taylor Baur and Southern Idaho transfer Taylia Stimpson. Baur was a McDonald's All-American nominee as was freshman Teaghan Flaherty.
