Blue Demons face Connecticut Jan. 31 in first women's basketball game on FOX
STORRS, Conn. – While preparing for Tuesday's 5:30 p.m. showdown with No. 4/5 Connecticut, No. 18/21 DePaul made history with the BIG EAST announcement that FOX Sports will televise a women's basketball game for the first time on FOX.
The marquee national telecast will feature a rematch of UConn and DePaul on Jan. 31 at Wintrust Arena, the in-between Sunday during the two-week Super Bowl coverage.
It's a milestone for the sport of women's basketball trying to establish a foothold in the vast landscape of professional and collegiate sports in America. DePaul coach Doug Bruno is a leading proponent along with UConn coach Geno Auriemma in growing the appeal of the women's game in our national sports consciousness.
Including the TV assignments in the BIG EAST's announcement, the Blue Demons will appear on national TV a total of eight times in addition to Tuesday's telecast on the New York-based regional sports network SNY that reaches New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania.
The first national exposure for Bruno & Co. came with their appearance on the main ESPN network playing No. 2/2 Louisville in the Women's Jimmy V Classic at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Conn.
They defeated Creighton on Dec. 22 on FS1 in the first BIG EAST national telecast of the season and return to the national airwaves this Sunday with a 1 p.m. BIG EAST encounter at Marquette that will also be televised on FS1.The 1 p.m. tip is an adjustment from the originally scheduled 3:30 p.m. tip.
One week later on Jan. 10, the Blue Demons welcome Creighton to Wintrust Arena for their BIG EAST rematch that will be telecast on the CBS Sports Network.
Just three days after that, more national exposure with their home game versus St. John's on FS2. The main FOX network and NFL TV outlet televises the historic Jan. 31 game against UConn at Wintrust Arena.
There are two more opportunities for Bruno's program to showcase their high-scoring, volume-shooting, full-court pressure style of play that is as entertaining as it is successful. National TV broadcaster LaChina Robinson is a big proponent of "DePaulball" and has said the Blue Demons are so much fun to cover that they should be on TV more often.
DePaul's BIG EAST road matchup Feb. 10 at St. John's is being televised by FS2. Five days later, the Blue Demons conclude their regular-season run on national TV with a Feb. 15 BIG EAST encounter against Seton Hall at Wintrust Arena that will be telecast on FS1.
In all, the BIG EAST will have 17 games televised nationally including 14 games on the FOX family of networks along with three on CBS Sports Network. All conference games not designated for television, which also includes a previously announced 13-game SNY lineup, will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi, which is available on FloSports.
In addition to the selection of conference contests, FS1 will also cover the non-league battle between UConn and South Carolina on Feb. 8. The Gamecocks, who won the 2017 NCAA Championship, are currently ranked fifth in the Associated Press Top 25.
FOX Sports is also the home for out-of-market games on SNY. Out-of-market fans are able to stream the SNY games at no additional cost to authenticated subscribers who have FOX as part of their television package. Users will need to sign in with their TV provider credentials at https://www.foxsports.com/ or in the FOX Sports app. For in-market fans, all games and pre/post-game coverage on SNY are accessible live for authenticated SNY subscribers in the SNY broadcast footprint via SNY.tv and the NBC Sports app.
The BIG EAST Conference previously announced a one-year deal with leading sports streaming service, FloSports, to become the digital home of BIG EAST women's basketball. The agreement provides a platform for all women's basketball games that stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) presented by SoFi. FloSports will also carry BIG EAST original content such as "Fast Break", the Conference's weekly women's basketball features show.
