
Blue Demons Fall at Marquette

DePaul led thorughout the game, but drop 76-72 decision in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – DePaul led throughout the afternoon, but could not hold off Marquette as the Golden Eagles prevailed, 76-72, on Saturday at Fiserv Forum. Charlie Moore scored 21 with eight assists and six rebounds while Jaylen Butz and Paul Reed scored 14 points each.
DePaul controlled the game throughout first half, but Marquette's Markus Howard single-handedly kept the Golden Eagles in the game with 21 first-half point that included five three-pointers. Moore answered with a first half that consisted of 12 points, five assists and five rebounds and the Blue Demons led, 40-34, at the break.
The combination of Romeo Weems and Darious Hall contained Howard in the second half holding him scoreless for nearly 14 minutes of the second half.
Butz started the second half with a dunk to push the lead to eight before Marquette pulled to within three points over the next minute. The back-and-forth trend continued with the Blue Demons with the going ahead by seven points on two more occasions only to see Marquette close the gap.
Moore's eighth assist of the afternoon was converted by Butz to give DePaul a 61-54 lead with 8:29 left in the game. Marquette (16-6, 6-4 BIG EAST) chipped away and a free throw for Koby McEwen tied the game at 66-6 with 3:50 on the clock.
The two teams traded baskets and free throws over the next two minutes before a free throw by Howard tied the score and his jumper just inside three-point arc gave Marquette a 72-70 lead with 1:22 to go in the game.
Over the last 10 seconds, Marquette converted four free throws for the 76-72 final.
Reed added seven rebound to his 14 points while Butz grabbed four boards. Jalen Coleman-Lands scored 13 points with five rebounds for the Blue Demons.
Howard led all scorers with 31 points while McEwen totaled 13 points and nine rebounds.
DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena on Tuesday night to face Xavier. Start time is scheduled for 8 p.m. on FS1 and WSCR (670 AM).
