Blue Demons top Toledo 4-0 Saturday in tennis doubleheader
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – It was a terrific performance for a banged-up DePaul men's tennis team Saturday on very short rest.
Not long after battling Purdue to the final singles match before falling 4-3, the Blue Demons took on a well-rested Toledo team and came through with a 4-0 victory that was tougher than the final score might indicate.
DePaul (2-3) claimed the doubles point after the Boris Spanjaard/Christopher Casati duo prevailed over the Rockets' tandem 6-3 while Luuk Wassenaar and Tripp Tuff did likewise by the same score.
Inspired by Fran Tonejc's first singles appearance since last April while recovering from an injury, the Blue Demons won three matches to clinch the team victory.
Wassenaar got the ball rolling with a straight-set win over Thawin Suksathaporn 6-2, 6-2. Next came Fran Tonejc who topped Filip Zupancic 6-3, 6-2.
The clincher was Spanjaard's 6-4, 6-3 decision over Cole Shoults as Toledo fell to 2-5.
"We fought hard in our second match against a fresh opponent," said coach Matt Brothers. "Fran stayed composed and played great in his first singles match in more than 10 months.
"I'm very proud of these guys for the way they competed today."
The road odyssey continues for Brothers & Co. with a pair of matches in sunny Florida beginning Friday against Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Meyers.
