Looking to start another winning streak Sunday vs. Providence at Wintrust Arena
CHICAGO – The buzzword emanating around the South Loop for Blue Demon fans is redemption.
No. 11/12 DePaul would like nothing better than to come out with a classic "DePaulball" performance on Sunday in its BIG EAST matchup against Providence.
Folks attending the 1 p.m. game at Wintrust Arena as a prelude to the Super Bowl will notice a little extra motivation for coach Doug Bruno and his team after losing its first conference game on Friday night despite leading Creighton by 20 at halftime.
No doubt Bruno has impressed upon his players the urgency of finishing off a team after building a substantial lead. There was never any room for complacency in the way Bruno has run his program for the last 34 years.
Look for DePaul (19-3, 9-1) to unleash a full-court press that is forcing more than 22 turnovers a game with only four teams being under the 20-mark all season.
Providence (10-12, 1-9) will step onto the Wintrust Arena court averaging 18 per game in BIG EAST play. The Friars had 19 turnovers in an 85-55 loss at Marquette on Friday night.
Coming off a season-low eight assists against Creighton, the Blue Demons will be ready to move the ball much more efficiently in freeing up teammates for open looks.
Another characteristic of the DePaul style is playing fearlessly, and that will be emphasized on Sunday.
Senior co-captains Chante Stonewall and Kelly Campbell will take the lead in getting their team back on the winning track. On Friday night, Stonewall was a warrior once again with a double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds while also anchoring a press that forced 23 turnovers. Campbell was a demon on the backboards with 13 rebounds---many in critical situations.
The Blue Demons have been highly successful down through the years of bouncing back from a loss. In fact, the last time Bruno & Co. lost back-to-back games was four years ago with setbacks to Notre Dame and Temple on Dec. 10 and Dec. 15 of 2016.
Last season after a BIG EAST loss to Marquette, DePaul responded by winning the next 11 games in a row.
In the first encounter with Providence on Jan. 3, the Blue Demons came away with an 80-67 road victory as Sonya Morris scored 21 points and Dee Bekelja added a career-high 20.
Providence comes into the rematch having lost nine of its last 10 games. The Friars 6-foot, 3-inch sophomore forward Mary Baskerville leads the team averaging nearly 13 points along with 8.1 rebounds a game. Kaela Webb is dangerous from behind the arc converting at a 41.2 percent clip.
