Stonewall and Campbell will be honored after Sunday's game against Xavier
CHICAGO – It promises to be an emotion-filled Sunday afternoon when No. 13/13 DePaul honors intrepid seniors Chante Stonewall and Kelly Campbell when they play their final game at McGrath-Phillips Arena.
A postgame ceremony after the 2 p.m. game against Xavier will highlight the sparkling careers of two exceptional student-athletes who have become cornerstones of powerful foundation coach Doug Bruno has built with this nationally recognized program.
These are a pair of consummate warriors, exhausting themselves and their wide array of talents in the singular pursuit of elevating "DePaulball" to a place in DePaul history.
You watch Stonewall at the point of the vaunted full-court press causing all kinds of havoc and commotion while the 6-foot, 1-inch forward and her teammates force opponents into nearly 22 turnovers a game along with plenty of stress and aggravation.
Then you see her sprint 94 feet to the other end of the court to help patrol the paint and administer her lockdown defense. She keeps up this demanding pace the entire game.
You watch Campbell, a vigilant and visionary point guard maximize every ounce of guile, cunning and whatever her 5-10 body can offer in positioning and fighting for rebounds against bigger and stronger opponents.
Seeing that relentless effort and marveling how she never seems to tire explains how a point guard can become one of the BIG EAST's best in rebounds and steals. Her innate basketball IQ and decision-making allow Campbell to lead the nation in assist-turnover ratio.
It is no surprise there are a fair amount of people who rate Stonewall and Campbell among the five best players in the conference.
Stonewall is fourth in scoring at 17.5 points a game and is second in offensive rebounds and steals. Campbell leads the league in assists and assist-turnover ratio and is second in defensive rebounds. In conference action, she is averaging nearly nine points, 9.4 rebounds and nearly six assists a game.
Stonewall's signature moment came in the BIG EAST tournament championship game last year when she put the entire DePaul program on her shoulders and completed the game-winning three-point play with five seconds left in the 74-73 victory over Marquette.
Campbell's versatility has resulted in a pair of triple-doubles which ties Jessica January for the all-time program record. She came one point away from setting a new standard on Friday with nine points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists against Butler.
Bruno and his Blue Demons (23-3, 13-1) will do their best keeping their emotions in check during the BIG EAST matchup with Xavier (2-22, 1-12) while at the same time making sure to send off their seniors on a winning note.
DePaul will be shooting for its fifth win in a row and 15th success in its last 16 games. Xavier brings a nine-game losing streak to Lincoln Park and is led by A'rianna Gray who is averaging 16.1 points and 9.6 rebounds.
