DePaul Drops Season Opener at UNI-Dome Classic

CHICAGO - DePaul softball fell to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits 4-1 on Friday in their first game of the UNI-Dome Classic held in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
The Blue Demons and Jackrabbits held each other scoreless through four innings with junior Natalie Halvorson racking up seven strikeouts before allowing two homeruns in the fifth. Sophomore third baseman Allison Yoder launched the ball to center field and Kelsey Lenox launched a three-run bomb scoring freshman first baseman Cylie Halvorson and sophomore right fielder Peyton Daugherty.
Freshman Grace Glanzer pitched a complete game in her debut for the Jackrabbits, earning her first shutout of the season and her career. The righty struck out three, walked six and gave up just two hits.
DePaul would rally to score one in the bottom of the seventh to cut the deficit but the Glanzer held out. Sophomore second baseman Skylor Hilger doubled to left center field, advanced to third on a freshman pinch hitter Tori Meyer fly out and scored off a senior centier fielder Angela Scalzitti fly out.
Transfer pitcher Erin Hocker made her debut for DePaul in the circle facing nine batters and recording her first strikeout as a Blue Demon. Senior catcher Jessica Cothern doubled in the first, accounting for DePaul's second hit.

The Blue Demons face off against South Dakota at 10:15 a.m. CT and Drake at 2:45 p.m. CT in the second day of the UNI-Dome Classic.
