No. 14/14 DePaul finshes strong in 71-65 victory at St. John's
QUEENS, N.Y. – It wasn't looking good for No. 14/14 DePaul most of Friday night, but when it counted the most, "DePaulball" made a heroic appearance.
Sparked by Sonya Morris, Kelly Campbell and Chante Stonewall, the Blue Demons rallied for a 71-65 BIG EAST victory over a St. John's team that led most of the night. DePaul improved to 21-3, 11-1 and St. John's fell to 14-9, 7-5.
Morris scored nine points in the final 10 minutes, Campbell all of her points in the fourth quarter and Stonewall came through with some clutch baskets late to keep the comeback going.
Morris finished with 18 points and nine rebounds while Lexi Held scored 15 points. Stonewall scored 16 points and Campbell notched a double-double with 10 points while tying a career high with 16 rebounds. Deja Church chipped in with five points, 10 rebounds and four steals.
It would all come down to the final 10 minutes as the Blue Demons were chasing a 49-40 St. John's lead. It looked promising when Campbell's three launched an 11-2 run with Maya Stovall converting a three-point play followed by a Morris three and a Morris two.
Suddenly, it was 56-50 and St. John's coach Joe Tartamella called timeout to regroup. "DePaulball" had come to life. Baskets by Morris and Stonewall made it a two-point game. It was 61-58 when a clutch Held three-pointer tied it 61-61 with 2:23 left.
After a St. John's score, Campbell ignited a 9-0 game-defining run with a steal and three-point shot. Morris buried four foul shots and Campbell added two more from the line. The Blue Demons outscored their hosts 31-16 in the critical fourth quarter.
Trailing by seven at halftime, DePaul saw St. John's open the third quarter on a 9-1 run to assume a 44-29 lead. Kiara Dallmann came off the bench to score twice down low and the Blue Demons were down 11 at the media timeout.
DePaul coach Doug Bruno was searching for the lineup combination that would click and spark a much-needed run. His offense had been inconsistent to that point.
Out of the media timeout, the Red Storm scored on a driving layup for a 46-33 advantage. Down 49-33, DePaul scored seven straight in cutting the deficit to 49-40 heading into the final 10 minutes.
Stonewall, Church, Held and Morris all scored as the Blue Demons jumped out to a 9-4 lead heading into the first quarter media timeout.
After a pair of Morris free throws and a Stonewall connection from behind the arc, St. John's scored the last eight points of the quarter to lead 15-14. DePaul made just five of its first 19 shots.
The Red Storm scored the first four points of the second quarter and the 12-0 run made it 19-14. After Morris countered with a jumper, the home team went on a 6-2 spurt and the Blue Demons trailed 25-18 at the media timeout.
A Held jumper followed by her three-pointer plus a Church free throw cut the deficit to one. An 8-2 Red Storm burst restored the deficit to seven. Church and Kadaja Bailey exchanged buckets as the Blue Demons trailed 35-28 at halftime. St. John's had six 3-pointers to three for DePaul.
DePaul now heads to South Orange, N.J. for a Sunday matinee at Seton Hall.
