Blue Demons brace for opponent that has won five of its last six games
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – An elderly DePaul professor who stays in shape put in a good-natured request that his favorite women's basketball team kindly refrain from such narrow escapes as Friday night's late-game rally at St. John's.
He said he wasn't sure how many more of these games his heart could handle.
The No. 14/14 Blue Demons would love to oblige this academician and the rest of their fan base with a less-stressful experience Sunday at Seton Hall with tipoff set for noon on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
Spending Friday night chasing the Red Storm and falling behind by 16 points in the middle of the third quarter presented a daunting challenge.
But Lexi Held's three-pointer with 3:44 left in the third quarter ignited a game-saving surge that saw DePaul (21-3, 11-1) outscore St. John's 36-14 over a 13-minute span.
Sonya Morris, Kelly Campbell and Chante Stonewall keyed the comeback with Campbell scoring all 10 of her points in the fourth quarter. Campbell was also dominant on the backboards tying a career high with 16 rebounds.
Coach Doug Bruno and his insightful staff will concoct a game plan and strategy to overcome a Seton Hall team that has won five of its last six games.
Foremost on their radar will be all-purpose forward Shadeen Samuels and the explosive offensive talent Alexis Lewis.
In Friday night's 72-60 victory over Marquette, Lewis scored 28 points including 6-of-7 shooting from deep and 11-of-15 overall along with eight rebounds. Samuels came away with 17 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three steals as the Pirates improved to 15-8, 8-4.
Bruno has cultivated a diversely talented and steady starting five of Stonewall (17.1 points a game), Morris (16.3 points), Held (14.9 points), Deja Church (10.1 points) and the blue-collar Campbell who is averaging 8.1 points, 8.5 rebounds and nearly six assists per game.
His rotation of reliable reserves has begun to crystalize with Dee Bekelja (8.5 points a game) and Maya Stovall plugging in at guard and 6-foot, 2-inch forward Kiara Dallmann the buffer inside. Just back from an injury, Jolene Daninger could provide more depth.
If the starting five led by senior co-captains Stonewall and Campbell is clicking on all cylinders Sunday while Bekelja & Co. make seamless contributions into the "DePaulball" flow of the game, perhaps a certain DePaul professor can breathe a sigh of relief.
