CHICAGO – It may be a brand-new year, but not much has changed when it comes to college basketball and COVID-19.
A late scheduling adjustment by the BIG EAST Conference attempting to complete as many games as possible during a raging pandemic resulted in No. 18/21 DePaul welcoming a fast-starting Villanova ball club Monday to Wintrust Arena for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
The Blue Demons' fourth league matchup will be shown on the BIG EAST Digital Network/FloSports. John Fanta will handle play-by-play and Kimberly Adams is the color analyst.
Patience is the watchword when dealing with the sports world in 2020-21. The Villanova at DePaul matchup had been originally scheduled for Feb. 13.
But with the postponement of the Blue Demons' Sunday game at Marquette due to the Golden Eagles pausing their program because of COVID-19 protocols and Saturday's postponement of Villanova and Georgetown due to contact tracing, the BIG EAST quickly pivoted and moved up the February game.
DePaul (5-3, 2-1 in the BIG EAST) will match its guard-dominated lineup of Sonya Morris, Lexi Held, Deja Church, Dee Bekelja, Darrione Rogers along with 6-foot, 1-inch forward Jorie Allen against a Villanova team featuring the BIG EAST's leading scorer and rebounder, 6-1 Maddy Siegrist.
All five Blue Demon backcourt performers are averaging in double figures led by Morris at 17.4 points a game. Bekelja is next at 14.6 points followed by Held (14.3), Church (12.9) and Rogers (12).
Indiana transfer Allen has played in two games since gaining eligibility through the NCAA's blanket waiver, averaging nine points and providing coach Doug Bruno with a valuable inside scoring threat. The sophomore forward is also a more equitable matchup size-wise against opposing post players.
The Blue Demons' vaunted full-court pressure should be cranked up on Monday looking to disrupt the Wildcats' offensive flow while limiting Siegrist's offensive opportunities that have sparked her team to a 7-1 start, 2-1 in conference.
The reigning 2019-20 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year has started her sophomore season leading the league in scoring and rebounding (23.3 points and 11.6 rebounds per game). The BIG EAST's three-time Player of the Week is second in the nation with six double-doubles including 34 points and 19 rebounds against Creighton and 31 points and 13 boards versus LaSalle.
Backing her up in the Wildcat attack is Brianna Herlihy averaging 14.9 points and 8.1 rebounds while Sarah Mortensen adds 12.2 points and 6.3 boards. Under new coach Denise Dillon, Villanova's only loss was 90-52 to No. 4/5 Connecticut.
