80th minute goal sends Pirates to 1-0 win
CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer suffered its first loss since Oct. 2, falling to Seton Hall at Wish Field on a rainy Wednesday afternoon, 1-0. The Blue Demons (6-5-1, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) and Pirates (5-5-2, 1-4 BIG EAST) battled through rainy conditions that stopped the match in the 67th minute. After the delay, a Seton Hall goal in the 80th minute was the difference in the match.
With sunny skies to open the match, both sides looked to set the tone in the opening minutes. Seton Hall settled in and made its presence felt with its group that featured plenty of size. The Seton Hall midfield and central defense helped disrupt Blue Demon attempts to find offensive rhythm. As the Pirates progressed in the offensive end, Gandhi Cruz and the DePaul defense contained the attacks.
Cruz knocked away a pair of first half shots and also secured a handful of attempted crosses. Offensively, the Blue Demons were able to muster only three shots compared to nine from Seton Hall in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half, Seton Hall received a huge opportunity in the 51st minute. Jake Fuderer was whistled for a foul in the box, granting the Pirates a penalty opportunity. On the attempted PK, Cruz dove to his left and knocked away the attempted shot, keeping the game knotted at one.
After rain forced a delay that lasted more than 30 minutes, the Blue Demons looked to spark their offense. The Blue Demons had a key chance on a low cross that was swung in front, but Jacob Huth and Jacob Seeto were unable to get to the dangerous chance. The sides played on in the rain without a score and time winding down.
In the 80th minute, Seton Hall's Jordan Jowers got free deep in DePaul territory. Jowers knocked a ball free from the DePaul defense and quickly knocked a shot past Cruz to break the tie. Jowers' goal would be the game winner and the Pirates would hold on to hand the Blue Demons their second conference loss of the season.
