Blue Demons shutout by BIG EAST leaders
CHICAGO - DePaul women's soccer could not mount a rally against the Xavier Musketeers on Thursday afternoon, falling 1-0 at Wish Field. The Blue Demons (6-8, 3-3 BIG EAST) were unable to push across a goal after a first-half strike by the BIG EAST-leading Musketeers (13-1-1, 6-1 BIG EAST). With the loss, DePaul had its three-match winning streak snapped.
DePaul matched the Musketeers stride for stride in the opening minutes, sticking with conference leaders. DePaul attackers Kristin Boos and Morgan Turner tried to shake free on the offensive end, but the Xavier defense held DePaul in check. Defensively, the Blue Demons dealt with Xavier's build-up play, keeping the Musketeers' opportunities at a minimum.
With time winding down in the half, DePaul had totaled six shots to Xavier's eight. The Musketeers lined up a corner with less than a minute to go. Carrie Lewis swung in a cross that found the head of Dana Dahm. Dahm's headed attempt was well-placed into the bottom left corner and found the back of the net, giving Xavier a 1-0 lead.
After halftime, the Blue Demons attempted to find a rhythm to generate chances. The Blue Demons pushed forward with Boos and Turner on a handful of occasions but the swarming Xavier defense locked opportunities down. The Blue Demons generated two second-half corners and fired off five shots, but none of the attempts came on target.
Xavier was able to hold off the Blue Demons until the final whistle to claim their 13th win of the season. After three-straight wins in conference play, the Blue Demons return to .500 in BIG EAST action this fall.
