Haiser, da Silva connect late to seal victory over Red Storm
CHICAGO – In a fitting farewell, the DePaul women's soccer team delivered a 1-0 Senior Day victory over St. John's on Oct. 31, closing out their regular season home schedule with all eight seniors on the Wish Field pitch together for the final time.
It means the world to our staff and our seniors — Mason Hillery, Mackenzie Lee, Marin Stamper, Shayna da Silva, Kristen Schwartz, Jericho Frigon, Mya Gardner and Danielle Fjeldsted — that we were able to put a complete performance together today, said head coach Michele O'Brien. We got the shutout, and a lot of people contributed at a high level. I thought we got better as the game went on, and it was amazing to score late and put it away on Senior Day.
The victory, secured with a goal from freshman forward Katelyn Haiser and assisted by da Silva in the 82nd minute, moved the Blue Demons to 5-6-6 on the season.
How It Happened
St. John's held tight to the reins on both ends of the pitch in the first half, delivering seven shot attempts while holding the Blue Demons shotless. Hillery rerouted three attempts in that time, keeping the match scoreless.
In the second half, DePaul flipped the script. Tallying a dominant 9-2 shot edge, the Blue Demons looked hungry for their second win of BIG EAST play.
We regrouped at halftime and talked about what was required to put ourselves in a position to win the game, said O'Brien. Maybe we weren't playing to our potential in the first half, and it was about making a switch and playing our style.
It was only a matter of time before an attempt found the back of the net, as shots from Haiser, Lee, Fjeldsted and freshman midfielder Carolina Capizzi slowly wore down Red Storm goalkeeper Kayla Bower.
The duo of Haiser and da Silva finally broke open the game, syncing up for their third goal and assist combination this season in the 82nd minute.
Traveling up the far side, da Silva spotted Haiser in stride. The senior found the freshman, and Haiser did the rest, evading three swarming St. John's defenders on the left side of goal and sending the ball to the middle right side of the net for the 1-0 score.
Katelyn and Shayna have a great dynamic and a really good chemistry both on and off the field, which is really special, said O'Brien. I think they complement each other well with their skill sets.
The Blue Demons finished the final eight minutes strong, allowing zero shots down the stretch. When the 89th minute came, a final round of substitutions put seniors Hillery, Lee, Stamper, da Silva, Schwartz, Frigon, Gardner and Fjeldsted on the pitch together for the final time at Wish Field.
The match ended in a one-goal victory, Hillery's sixth shutout of 2026. The celebration that ensued was joyful and full of smiles, a fitting sendoff for seniors who meant so much to the program.
Our senior class is so special, said O'Brien. To come away with a win on Senior Day when all of the seniors were subbed on the field at the end of the game really was a fairy tale ending to their careers.
