YPSILANTI, Mich. – Yuliya Kizelbasheva and immediate-impact freshman Eleanor Nobbs carried the day for DePaul's singles unit Friday in day one of the Eagle Invitational hosted by Eastern Michigan.
Kizelbasheva and Nobbs both won a pair of matches at the Chippewa Club and earned berths in Saturday title matches.
Kizelbasheva served notice to the other nine teams that she was all business beginning with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Nirva Patel of Oakland.
The second-seeded sophomore from Russia followed up with gritty 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(9) decision over Oihane Vicario of Cleveland State. That set the stage for the Flight 3 title match against top seed Maria Potsi of Northern Illinois.
Nobbs needed the minimum four sets to sweep past her first two opponents. She opened up with a 6-1, 6-2 verdict over Northwoods' Rafaella Platsiota before dispatching host Eastern Michigan's Vasavi Ganesan 6-1, 6-3. Lenka Antonijevic and Yuliya Kizelbasheva who have qualified for the ITA Super Regional in three weeks eliminated Yasmin Glazbrook and Nirva Patel of Oakland 7-5 in the Green Flight. Next up is Amy Kaplan and Emma Peeler from Ball State.
