Nobbs singles champion, Rand and Kizelbasheva win doubles at Eagle Invitational
YPSILANTI, Mich. – DePaul brought home two titles Saturday from the Eagle Invitational women's tennis tournament hosted by Eastern Michigan.
Continuing to make an immediate impact on a high-level program, freshman Eleanor Nobbs came through with a championship in Flight 4 after defeating Tara Damnjanovic of Illinois State 6-4, 6-2.
It was the first singles title for Nobbs in just the third tournament of her collegiate career.
Filling in for Lenka Antonijevic, Kaya Rand never missed a beat combining with Yuliya Kizelbasheva. The improvised tandem claimed the Green Flight doubles championship by knocking off Isabelle Popma and Vasavi Ganesan of host Eastern Michigan 8-6.
Nobbs fell just short of another title, coming in second with Valentina Martin in the White Flight doubles final. The Blue Demon duo fell 8-6 to Livia Lukacs and Jessica Braun 8-6.
Kizelbasheva brought home a second-place finish in Flight 3 after dropping the title match 7-5, 6-3 to Illinois State's Maria Potsi.
Martin bounced back from yesterday's semifinal setback to win her Flight 5 third-place match 6-3, 6-2 over Sanvi Ahuwalia of Northwood.
Speaking of rebounds, Rand recovered from her opening loss in Flight 6 to win a consolation match yesterday followed by Saturdays' fifth-place win over Zuzanna Krygier of Findlay by a 6-4, 6-4 score.
Coach Marisa Arce and her team will engage some formidable competition when they fly out to Seattle for the Oct. 8-10 Husky Invitational hosted by Washington.
