Doubles team tops Illinois in ITA Super Regional consolation match
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Lenka Antonijevic and Yuliya Kizelbasheva battled to the end in their opening match Friday at the ITA Super Regional hosted by Ohio State.
Only qualifiers from the ITA Midwest Regional competed at the Ty Tucker Tennis Center.
The DePaul doubles team came up short Friday morning in an 8-6 setback to Kate Duong and Josei Frazier of Illinois.
In a Super Regional consolation match, the Blue Demon tandem finished off their first Super Regional appearance on a winning note, taking down the Illini's Kasia Treiber and Kida Ferrari by an 8-6 score.
That concluded the team's participation in this high-level collegiate event.
"In this tournament, there are no easy matches," said DePaul coach Marisa Arce. "This pair from Illinois made us earn all of our points in the consolation match.
"I'm so proud of Lenka and Yuliya for creating and trusting their offense in order to get this win. As a team, we're always trying to get better each time we step on the court, and today we did just that.
"In our second match, we were able to improve in the areas that contributed to our loss in the first round. That was critical in our win today and will prove to be valuable in the long term."
DePaul women's tennis closes out its fall tournament season on Halloween weekend at the Louisville Classic.
