Blue Demons wrap up 2021 season with 2-1 loss in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE - DePaul women's soccer wrapped up the 2021 season on the road in Milwaukee on Thursday night, falling to the Marquette Golden Eagles, 2-1. In a match that had its potential postseason implications spoiled before kickoff, the BIG EAST foes battled through cold and rainy conditions at Valley Fields.
DePaul concluded the 2021 campaign, head coach Michele O'Brien's first at the helm, with a 7-11 record and a 4-6 clip in BIG EAST play. Both the overall and conference marks are the best for a first-year head coach in the history of the DePaul women's soccer program.
After the UConn Huskies miraculously defeated the previously-unbeaten Georgetown Hoyas earlier this afternoon, the Blue Demons needed Seton Hall to record a win over Providence to give the Blue Demons a chance to advance to the BIG EAST Championship. However, just before the Blue Demons kicked off with the Golden Eagles, Providence secured a win and the conference tournament slate was set. The matchup with Marquette did not have any postseason implications but the Blue Demons had a chance to spoil Marquette's senior night and record their first win at Valley Fields since 2014.
The Blue Demons came out of the gates with energy, putting the pressure on the Marquette defense. The Blue Demons were able to strike first in the 11th minute. Grace Phillpotts swung in a cross from the left wing and Katie Godden was able to knock a one-time shot home. The score was the first of Godden's career. Godden has made seven starts and has played in 17 matches this fall. She's the eighth Blue Demon to find the back of the net this fall.
As the first half wore on, the Golden Eagles were able to respond. An equalizing goal came in the 24th minute from Elsi Twombly and the go-ahead strike was delivered in the 40th minute by Katrina Wetherell. Marquette entered the halftime break with a 2-1 advantage.
In the second half, both sides traded possession but there were not many quality looks in the box to be had on either end. On a Blue Demon free kick, Phillpotts swung in another cross to a dangerous area but Marquette was able to knock the ball out of the traffic in front of goal. DePaul was able to put only one attempt on goal in the final 45 minutes and the Golden Eagles kept the action away from the DePaul attacking third.
The Blue Demons had a free kick sent in by Mollie Eriksson in the final seconds, but the Blue Demons could not get an attempt on target. Marquette held on to claim the match after the pair of unanswered first-half goals.
