Thanksgiving Day match at noon will be shown on ESPN3
ST. THOMAS, U.S. Virgin Islands – The Blue Demons arrived in tropical paradise on Tuesday after a long day of travel that began at 4 a.m. and ended at 4 p.m. when their Delta Airlines jet touched down at Cyril E. King International Airport.
It was 26 degrees when they left Lincoln Park for O'Hare Airport. It was 84 degrees when they arrived in the Virgin Islands.
No wonder coach Doug Bruno's players were getting excited about their six-day visit that features three games in the popular Paradise Jam tournament.
DePaul (3-1), which is receiving votes in the AP Top 25 national poll, opens play on Thanksgiving Day against perennial Big Ten power Rutgers that will air on ESPN3.
Bruno will make sure his team focuses on the Scarlet Knights amidst all the distractions in this atypical basketball environment.
The men's basketball Paradise Jam concluded the day before Bruno & Co. arrived, and a tournament host recounted the story of one team that canceled every practice so the players could enjoy their getaway.
Needless to say, that team did not win a game.
Three games in three days will certainly test the resilience and conditioning of DePaul's players while challenging the acumen of its coaching staff. There will be precious little time to prepare for No. 9/12 Arizona on Friday and SEC opponent Vanderbilt 24 hours later.
Five starters averaging in double figures could very well sustain the Blue Demons heading into this hoops gauntlet.
Two-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Aneesah Morrow is thriving at the next level. She is nearly averaging a double-double, leading the team in scoring at 17.3 points a game and in rebounding (9.8).
She's been a force on both ends of the court, topping the team in blocked shots with 17 and steals with 10. Morrow began the week No. 4 in the country in blocks per game and No. 5 in total rejections.
Off the best start of her Blue Demon career, Deja Church is scoring 16.3 points a game and is third on the team in rebounds.
All-BIG EAST guards Sonya Morris (16.3 points per game) and Lexi Held (13.5 points, team-high 6.3 assists per game) provided a one-two knockout punch in last Sunday's 78-75 win over rival Northwestern. Morris went off for 13 points in the first 10 minutes and Held closed it down with 13 points in the fourth quarter.
Emerging sophomore Darrione Rogers rounds out the double-figure lineup averaging 10.8 points and nine rebounds. She has posted a pair of double-doubles in the first four games.
Rutgers is off to a 4-1 start with wins over Saint Peter's, South Alabama, Fairfield and Harvard in overtime and a loss to Stony Brook.
The Scarlet Knights specialize in holding scores down, averaging 56.6 points and keeping opponents at 48.6 points a game. Nobody is averaging in double figures with Lasha Petree topping the team at 8.6 points. Osh Brown averages 6.6 points and 10.6 rebounds.
