DePaul faces Nicholls State Tuesday morning on Field Trip Day
CHICAGO – Numbers don't lie.
You are what your record says you are.
In both cases, let's have fun with some fancy figures heading into DePaul's 11 a.m. Wintrust Chicago Field Trip Day game Tuesday against Nicholls State at Wintrust Arena.
For starters, we've been touting Aneesah Morrow as perhaps the nation's most impactful freshman as the former Simeon All-Stater leads all rookies in rebounds and is second in scoring.
Well, how about this. As of Sunday, Morrow was fourth in the nation in rebounding among ALL Division I players including top-of-the-line pedigree bluebloods from places like South Carolina, Connecticut and Stanford.
The physically imposing 6-foot, 1-inch power forward is also No. 6 in the country in offensive rebounds per game and No. 10 in blocks and total rebounds per game. Morrow is No. 11 in field goals, No. 13 in double-doubles, No. 14 in steals and No. 17 in points.
You might say she is taking a page from the Paige playbook, endeavoring to follow in the massive footsteps of last season's All-Time Freshman standout Paige Bueckers of UConn who won every national award imaginable.
The Her Hoops Stats website and newsletter ranked the nation's top 10 freshmen after the first month of the season and Morrow was No. 1.
Numbers simply do not lie.
Coach Doug Bruno preaches to his team that leading the nation in assists can be a path to the NCAA postseason. When the Hall of Fame coach woke up on Sunday morning, his team led the nation in assists per game. DePaul was also No. 2 in scoring and third in total assists.
Lexi Held is seventh on the country in assists. Sonya Morris is No. 17 in field goals. DePaul led the BIG EAST in 11 stat categories including scoring, assists, assists per game, offensive rebounds, field goals, three-point defense and turnovers forced.
Morrow tops the BIG EAST in 12 statistical categories including points, field goals, rebounds, offensive rebounds, steals, blocks and double-doubles. Held is tops in assists, Morris in field goal attempts and Deja Church leads the league in free throw percentage.
Tally up all the above and no wonder the Blue Demons are 8-2 and riding a four-game winning streak. They have yet to be ranked in the Top 25, but perhaps Bruno can turn that into a hidden advantage.
Fly under the national radar before striking unexpectedly. Play the no-respect card. Let opponents believe you aren't worthy of Top 25 status even though you beat No. 14/14 Kentucky and came within a few minutes of upsetting No. 7/11 Arizona.
Numbers don't lie.
There will be nearly 1,700 schoolchildren, teachers and administrators from 11 elementary schools screaming for the Demons Tuesday in Wintrust Arena.
Wintrust Arena is their temporary classroom at the annual Field Trip Day game in which DePaul Athletics provides free tickets and transportation to several thousand grammar-school students throughout the Chicago area, introducing them to the possibility of a college education.
Taking full advantage of this Vincentian outreach are Daniel Webster Elementary School, Daniel S. Wentworth Elementary School, Douglas Taylor Elementary School, Eberhart Elementary School, John B. Drake Elementary School, Lewis School of Excellence, Maria Saucedo Scholastic Academy, Richard J. Daley Academy, South Loop Elementary School, William P. Nixon Elementary School and William F. Finkl Academy.
They will delight in DePaul's double-figure starting lineup of Morrow (18.4 points, 11.9 rebounds per game), Morris (15.9 points a game), Deja Church (15.2 points), Held (13 points, 5.7 assists) and Darrione Rogers (10 points, 6.8 rebounds).
There will be no letup in the decibel level when Kierra Collier, Dee Bekelja, Kaitlyn Ammons, Kendall Holmes and Hannah Purcell enter the game.
Nicholls State (2-7) arrives in the South Loop from Thibodaux, La. having lost its last four games including Saturday's 73-63 setback to South Alabama. The Colonels are led 6-0 forward Chelsea Cain (14.2 points, 6.2 rebounds a game), 5-7 Chyna Allen (13.7 points) and 5-9 Bryanna Washington (9.8 points, 5.9 rebounds).
