FS1 national TV audience for 7:30 p.m. rivalry showdown at Wintrust Arena
CHICAGO – The brains behind the Blue Demons has a blueprint for success.
Guide your team towards an early spike around the Christmas holidays and just before playing the bulk of your conference games.
Keep your players on a high yet even keel with as much consistency as possible in the unpredictable world of sports.
Strive to peak during March Madness playing your best basketball of the season right on through the NCAA tournament.
Well, scoring 100 or more points in five of your last six games would seem to indicate that early spike as DePaul heads into a critical showdown Wednesday night with longtime rival No. 20/17 Notre Dame at Wintrust Arena.
The nationally televised game on FS1 will tip at 7:30 p.m. in the South Loop as DePaul shoots for its eighth win in a row.
Coach Doug Bruno keeps it simple for his players.
Share it or shoot it.
Assists are paramount for Bruno, and his team has notched 23 or more in five of the last six games including a season-high 33 against Northern Illinois.
The three-point shooting has picked up measurably. Led by Darrione Rogers and Lexi Held, the Blue Demons have knocked down 67 from deep in the last six games---an average of 11.2 per game.
They are connecting at a 37.4 percent rate in that span.
Shooting is something that can come and go, but rebounding is ever-present. In the last six games, DePaul has outrebounded opponents 280-219 for an average margin of 46.7 to 36.5 per game. That includes a 46-30 edge over a taller, nationally ranked Kentucky team and 61-43 over NIU.
This stretch of excellence has been sustained by a 35-point game from Sonya Morris at St. John's, Held's career-high 11 assists and Deja Church's 20 points at Kentucky, Aneesah Morrow's five consecutive double-doubles, Darrione Rogers' 21 points on 6-of-7 three-point shooting against Xavier and her 20 points versus NIU and Dee Bekelja's 16 points (8-of-11 shooting) against Nicholls State and 15 points going 5-of-8 from deep vs. NIU.
Morrow comes into the game leading the nation in rebounds, is second in double-doubles and offensive rebounds per game, fifth in field goals, sixth in points and seventh in steals.
Morris is No. 3 in the country in field goals and No. 16 in points while Held is No. 4 in assists and No. 17 in steals.
They will need to raise the bar even higher on Wednesday against Notre Dame. The rival from South Bend is off to a 10-2 start including 2-0 in the rugged ACC.
The Fighting Irish feature three exciting young players in 6-3 sophomore Maddy Westbeld (13.9 points, 6.8 rebounds a game), 6-1 freshman Sonia Citron (12.3 points) who was recently rated the No. 2 freshman in the country behind Morrow and 5-10 freshman Olivia Miles (12 points, 7.8 assists, seven rebounds).
Senior Dara Mabrey is averaging nearly 11 points a game while 6-3 graduate student Maya Dodson contributes 9.7 points and nearly seven rebounds a game.
Fans attending the game can get into the Christmas spirit and participate in the women's basketball toy drive.
Donation boxes will be located outside of the arena in front of the main atrium and at the skybridge entrance from 5:30 p.m. until the beginning of halftime. Fans donating an unwrapped new toy will receive a DePaul facemask. Donations will benefit Marillac St. Vincent Family Services.
Blue Demon nation can make a huge impact in the life of a young child this holiday season.
