The Blue Demons fall to No. 25 Marquette in three sets
MILWAUKEE, Wis. – DePaul dropped its second straight match to open the season at No. 25 Marquette on Saturday afternoon at the Al McGuire Center. Emma Price led the Blue Demons with 10 kills in the 3-0 (25-14, 25-20, 25-15) defeat.
"Same result but much better effort from our side tonight. This season is all about adapting to match speed as quickly as possible, and we certainly moved in that direction tonight with rallies averaging almost twice in length as they did the night previous. The difference in the match was the error column, which we out did Marquette to a tune of three times the amount" said Head Coach Marie Zidek.
"I think though this was more of a reflection of early match woes that happen every season in the first handful of games. Our high end is there, now it becomes smoothing out the management parts of sets and consistently executing the routine plays."
"One of our biggest measuring sticks right now is do we get better start to finish, and with more competitive opportunities (this was just our 2nd match to Marquette's 8th), I think you're going to see a very excitable and dominant group evolve."
DePaul battled with the Golden Eagles early in the first set, keeping a close pace with Marquette until a 10-2 Marquette run made the score 21-10. The Golden Eagles went on to claim the opening set, 25-14. Emma Price led the Blue Demons with five kills.
The Blue Demons jumped out to a 3-1 lead early in second set behind kills from Donna Brown and Jill Pressly. After gaining a 7-4 advantage, Marquette battled back. Following a long rally, Marquette tied it at 8 before a Golden Eagles 12-5 run forced a DePaul timeout with the score 20-13. Marquette went on to claim the set, 25-20.
The third set played out similarly to the second as the Blue Demons played point for point with Marquette, building a 9-7 lead. However, another surge from the Golden Eagles saw them take the lead and stretch out a 23-14 advantage. Marquette (6-2,2-0 BIG EAST) claimed the set 25-15.
Molly Murrihy led DePaul (0-2,0-2 BIG EAST) with 19 assists while Rachel Krasowski totaled 13 digs. Phoenix Lee tallied a pair of service aces.
DePaul opens the home portion of the schedule on Tuesday night when Milwaukee visits McGrath-Phillips Arena. Start time is 6 p.m. and live coverage will be available on DePaul All-Access.
