Blue Demons' 6 p.m. tip Monday will be televised nationally on FS1
CHICAGO – Despite the degree of difficulty trying to secure wins on the road, No. 22/22 DePaul just completed a four-game sweep playing away from Wintrust Arena.
As a reward, the 11-4 Blue Demons now play their next four BIG EAST games in the South Loop beginning Monday night against an explosive Seton Hall team. Tipoff is 6 p.m. in front of a national TV audience on FS1.
Coach Doug Bruno's program improved its conference record to 6-2 after bringing home W's at Georgetown, Butler, Marquette and St. John's. That improved DePaul's road record to 5-1.
The pressure was on in Milwaukee and Queens. Bruno & Co. had to maintain their composure in crunch time, even falling behind in the fourth quarter against Marquette.
The difference-maker in both games was finishing strong with clutch baskets and free throws. DePaul's only setback on the road this season came at No. 2/1 Connecticut.
Whatever home-court advantage playing in the South Loop affords will come in handy against a Seton Hall team (9-5, 7-4) looking for retribution after being upset 77-76 by Creighton Saturday in South Orange, N.J.
The Pirates came up short despite a 25-point, 17-rebound performance by Desiree Elmore and Lauren Park-Lane's 19 points and nine assists. Elmore is averaging 16.7 points and 8.3 rebounds while Park-Lane averages 16.5 points and 5.4 assists.
And don't expect the team's leading scorer Andra Espinoza-Hunter (19.1 points a game) to replicate her seven points vs. Creighton shooting just 3-of-17 from the field. Espinoza-Hunter has been an emerging force in the BIG EAST this season after starting her career at UConn and then transferring to Mississippi State before landing in South Orange as a graduate student.
The Blue Demons enter Monday night's game leading the BIG EAST in nine categories including scoring (nearly 84 points a game), three-pointers, free throws, steals, turnovers forced and turnover margin.
Sonya Morris heads up the explosive attack averaging 18.8 points a game. Four other guards are averaging in double figures---Lexi Held at 15.5 points, Dee Bekelja (13.7), Deja Church (13.5) and Darrione Rogers (10.1). Jorie Allen is averaging nearly nine points a game while taking on the lion's share of the physical, blue-collar work inside and using her 6-foot, 1-inch frame to neutralize the opponent's best forward.
Held has been an absolute thief of late with 19 steals in her last four games---nearly five a game. No wonder the junior guard is No. 17 in the nation in steals. She leads the BIG EAST in steals, steals per game and three-point attempts.
She is also just seven points shy of the reaching the 1,000-point career milestone in less than three years. If she achieves that distinction on Monday, she will be the second Blue Demon to reach the 1K plateau this season as Church did it last month.
And Morris isn't that far away, needing only 38 more points to make it a 1K triumvirate.
