BIG EAST showdown at Wintrust Arena draws national TV audience on FS1
CHICAGO – Get ready for pressure-cooker basketball Saturday when No. 19/19 DePaul faces its backcourt nemesis Creighton at Wintrust Arena.
What an FS1 national TV audience listening to the call of play-by-play announcer Wayne Randazzo and analyst Meghan McKeown will discover are two guard-oriented programs with enough in common to more or less neutralize one another in recent matchups.
Scheduling quirks had the Blue Demons and Bluejays square off three times in 2020. DePaul won the first encounter 74-71 on Jan. 5 only to see Creighton prevail 63-61 on Jan. 31.
In their first meeting of the 2020-21 season, coach Doug Bruno's team rallied from a three-point deficit early in the fourth quarter for a 90-81 victory Dec. 22 in Omaha, Neb.
The visitors from Chicago had six players finish in double figures led by Sonya Morris' 22 points with Dee Bekelja adding 16 and Deja Church 15. They had one of their best games from three-point range knocking down 12 of-25. Morris also had eight assists and six rebounds.
Tactically, Bruno and Jays coach Jim Flanery look forward to matching wits, strategies and meticulous game plans as they strive to maximize their backcourt talent.
The South Loop guard quartet of Sonya Morris (19.1 points a game), Lexi Held (16.1 points), Dee Bekelja (14.5) and Deja Church (13.1) is combining to average nearly 63 points a game.
Factor in the offensive skills of Darrione Rogers (nearly 10 points a game), Jorie Allen (8.6 points) and the rest of their teammates---you can see why DePaul is sixth in the country at lighting up a scoreboard.
An "average" game for these sharp-shooters means 84 points as the Blue Demons strive for their fifth win in a row and ninth in their last 10 games. Their only loss in 2021 came to consensus No. 1-ranked Connecticut.
When Bruno's perpetual-motion attack is operating at top speed, his players have scored 90 or more points four times with two other games at 87 and 86 points, respectively.
Creating more scoring opportunities comes with DePaul's vaunted full-court pressure that is forcing opponents into 22.5 turnovers per game---No. 7 in the nation.
The Blue Demons (13-4, 10-2 BIG EAST) take a lot of shots, make their fair share of them and play a brand of basketball that is highly entertaining and fun to watch. TV announcer LaChina Robinson has spoken about how much she enjoys calling a DePaul game.
Creighton (6-8, 5-5) gets rolling behind guards Temi Carda (13.6 points a game), Tatum Rembao (10 points a game), Morgan Maly and the forward tandem of 6-foot, 1-inch Emma Ronsiek (10.6 points) and 6-2 Mykel Parham. Ronsiek had 28 points and 10 rebounds playing against DePaul back in December.
The Bluejays arrive in the South Loop after a pair of close calls. They edged Seton Hall 77-76 in overtime last Saturday and two days later escaped from Georgetown with a 42-41 win.
