PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The women's basketball players on No. 24/23 DePaul have one thing and one thing only on their collective minds.
That's getting back on the winning track.
Saddled with a late-season mini-slump, the Blue Demons would like nothing better than to take down their BIG EAST opponent Providence Saturday. Tip time at Alumni Hall is 12 noon with the game being shown on the BIG EAST Digital Network/FloSports. Mike Mancuso and Pam Roecker are on the call.
DePaul (13-6, 10-4 BIG EAST) has gotten sidetracked of late, falling to Creighton and Marquette at Wintrust Arena. Coach Doug Bruno is intent on righting the ship and finishing the regular season strong against the Friars followed by Butler on Monday.
It would be a good idea to build some momentum in advance of the BIG EAST tournament that tips off next weekend.
A key component in the Blue Demons restoring the swagger is the shooting touch of leading scorer Sonya Morris. It appeared the junior guard who is averaging nearly 19 points a game was emerging from a cold shooting spell midway through the loss to Marquette two days ago.
When she's right, Morris is an explosive scorer who can turn a game around with eight or nine consecutive points. That she can light up the scoreboard in all different ways makes her tough to defend and counteract.
Her fellow junior Lexi Held has been picking up the pace of late and is averaging 16.5 points a game on the season with her myriad of offensive moves and creative playmaking. Both Morris and Held are equally dangerous behind the arc or penetrating to the rim.
Another player who has been coming on strong of late is 6-foot, 1-inch sophomore Jorie Allen. She is Bruno's best option for paint points, and her deft touch down low provides the team with a steady interior presence.
Allen is also leading the way with her physical play, battling hard for rebounds and sacrificing her body going after 50-50 balls. She is exhibiting the kind of gritty toughness that was the hallmark of the graduated Kelly Campbell who is now thriving playing pro ball in Germany.
But three players bringing their 'A' game to Alumni Hall isn't enough. DePaul's program has always about a balanced scoring attack ignited by a fast tempo and full-court pressure on defense.
That means Bruno & Co. will continue needing key contributions from the likes of seniors Deja Church and Dee Bekelja along with talented freshman Darrione Rogers who is emerging as the second-toughest rebounder on the team behind Allen. Rogers leads all BIG EAST freshmen in rebounding and is seventh in scoring.
Once again, DePaul will be tested inside. This time, it's 6-3 Mary Baskerville, Providence's best player, and 6-4 Alyssa Geary. Baskerville leads the Friars averaging 13.4 points and nearly seven rebounds a game. The talented junior also leads her team in field goal percentage, steals and blocked shots.
Geary is averaging 11 points a game while three-point specialist Kyra Spiwak (32 threes) is averaging 11.3 points and connecting nearly 35 percent from deep.
The Friars are 6-12 overall and 4-9 in league play. They come into Saturday having lost four in a row and six of their last seven.
