The 5:30 p.m. FS2 telecast will feature a fast-paced tempo
QUEENS, N.Y. – Buckle up and get ready to floor it.
When No. 22/21 DePaul and St. John's hook up in another match race Wednesday night before a national TV audience on FS2, there's no half-stepping. From the opening tip at 5:30 p.m., both teams will be racing nonstop up and down the 94 feet of the Carnesecca Arena court.
When the Blue Demons (10-4, 7-2 BIG EAST) and St. John's (5-10, 2-8) met up on Jan. 13 in the South Loop, they combined for 185 points with the home team coming away with a 101-84 victory at Wintrust Arena.
The starting lineup of Dee Bekelja (22 points), Lexi Hel (21), Deja Church (18) and 17 points each from Sonya Morris and Jorie Allen was too much for the visiting Red Storm. That quintet combined to score 95 points.
Even though Qadashah Hoppie went off for 28 points and Kadaja Bailey had 22, DePaul's defensive game plan worked like a charm in limiting St. John's leading scorer Leilani Correa to just four points.
That's quite a feat. Correa might just be the most explosive scorer in the BIG EAST this season. The 6-foot sophomore guard leads the league with 30 points or more in four games---including the Johnnies' last game when she scored 33 against powerful Connecticut.
The Blue Demons' vaunted full-court pressure that is forcing opponents into more than 23 turnovers a game---No. 6 in the country---will endeavor to disrupt a St. John's team that is averaging more than 17 a game.
Bruno & Co. will be shooting for their sixth win in the last seven games featuring a lineup with five players averaging in double figures led by Morris at 18.6 points. The junior guard leads the team having scored 20-or-more points eight times in 14 games while classmate Held has finished in double figures every game except one.
Church is coming off a memorable performance scoring a career-high 24 points while adding six rebounds and five steals in last Sunday's 87-82 victory at Marquette. Lexi Held (15.6 points a game) is just 21 points away from reaching the 1,000 milestone for her career. Church reached that magic number last month.
Bekelja has been steady all season and rates among the best finishers on the roster. Allen has been a force inside for this guard-dominated team while freshman Darrione Rogers adds firepower and rebounding off the bench.
It all adds up to a high-powered offense that is the seventh-best in the nation averaging more than 84 points a game.
The Blue Demons have played well on the road this season going 4-1 away from Wintrust Arena. Their only setback came at Connecticut back on Dec. 29.
