Women's Tennis Heads to Kansas Riding Five-Match Winning Streak

At No. 46 Kansas State on Monday, Wichita State Wednesday, Butler Sunday at home
CHICAGO – There is nothing like going against a nationally ranked tennis team for your first match in 17 days.
Scheduling quirks amid a pandemic that includes one COVID-19 postponement when the opposing team was dealing with coronavirus protocols left DePaul women's tennis with an unusually long layoff.
That comes to an end Monday when coach Marisa Arce's team begins a short three-day spring break trip through Kansas to face No. 46 Kansas State on Monday and Wichita State on Wednesday. At the tail end of spring break, DePaul hosts Butler on Sunday.
The Blue Demons will be pursuing their sixth win in a row against some pretty stiff competition. Kansas State (4-4) has a match Sunday against rival and No. 45 Kansas in Lawrence. The Cyclones' four losses are to No. 19 Arkansas, No. 25 Arizona State, No. 30 Texas Tech and No. 41 TCU.
Kansas State is a team well accustomed to challenging opponents ranked on the Oracle/ITA Coaches Poll.
For that matter, Wichita State (5-12) has also faced a difficult schedule. Among the Shockers losses are No. 25 Arizona State, No. 32 Oklahoma, No. 34 Rice, No. 45 Kansas and No. 46 Kansas State. In a rematch on Saturday, Wichita State surprised Kansas with a 4-3 upset.
Butler is off to a 3-3 start with victories over Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, Marian and Dayton and losses to Middle Tennessee State, Miami (Ohio) and Indianapolis. The Bulldogs have matches against Western Kentucky on Friday and Valparaiso on Saturday before coming to Lakeshore Sport & Fitness on Sunday.
Leading the charge for Arce's team this week are Yuliya Kizelbasheva (7-1 in singles), Aspasia Avgeri (6-2) and Alina Kuzmenkova (5-2). Avgeri has competed exclusively in the toughest position at No. 1 singles while Kuzmenkova has played all her matches in the No. 2 position.
Avgeri and Kizelbasheva have each won five singles matches in a row while Kuzmenkova has won her last four.
A pair of Blue Demon doubles teams are off to fast starts in the dual-match season. The No. 1 tandem of Lenka Antonijevic and KIzelbasheva is 6-2. Matching that exemplary record is the No.3 doubles duo of Avgeri and Maddie Yergler. Both doubles teams have won their last five matches.
