Women’s tennis suffers first shutout of the season

BOCA RATON, FLA. – DePaul women's tennis fell 7-0 at Florida Atlantic Friday morning, marking DePaul's first shutout loss of the season. The Blue Demons struggled to gain momentum during the match at Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center. DePaul now departs Florida with an 0-2 record, having been defeated by FIU earlier in the week.

FAU jumped out to a lead in doubles play, nabbing victories from both No. 1 and No. 3 courts. Hannah Smith and Clara Nilsson tightly dropped their match 4-6 against the No. 64-ranked doubles pair in the nation, in the tandem of Bartha and Pavkova. Helin Alvarez and Roberta Sechi were defeated as well, in a 2-6 contest, giving Florida Atlantic the doubles point.

Singles action mirrored that of doubles, with the Owls prevailing on courts No. 1 and No. 6 in straight sets. The freshman Yasemin Pehlivan and the senior Smith provided DePaul with their best moments of the day, each winning sets in their matchups. Eventually, Sechi was bested 0-6, 6-7(6), on court No. 4, clinching the win for FAU.

Nilsson fell in her match 5-7, 2-6 at court No. 5, and Smith followed shortly thereafter with a 3-6, 6-2, 3-6 shortcoming at court No. 2. Pehlivan, the Blue Demons' best chance to salvage a point, narrowly lost her bout on court No. 3 in a 7-6(6), 0-6, 11-13 heartbreaker.
