Louisville Stymies DePaul in Cardinal Classic Opener

Blue Demons return to action at 4 p.m. against Miami (Ohio)
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – DePaul softball dropped its weekend-opener to Louisville, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Cardinal Classic.
DePaul (5-5) struggled to connect from behind the plate, tallying just three hits and five total bases on the outing.
The top of the third saw a Skylor Hilger single to third base followed by a Angela Scalzitti walk. Runners advanced on a Maranda Gutierrez sacrifice but Jessica Cothern could not bring the runners across.
Louisville (6-6) struck first in the third inning behind three hits. With runners on first and second, Taylor Roby singled to score Camryn Greenwood and take a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinal tacked on another run off of a solo shot to left center in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
The fifth inning saw a leadoff single by Gabby O'Riley to left field before the Cardinal turned a double play on a Nicole Sullivan grounder. Skyor Hilger recorded her second hit on the afternoon through the left side, but Scalzitti could not advance her on the next at bat.
Louisville went on to score their final run of the contest behind three hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. An RBI double to left field sent Sydney Bickel home from second to make the the score 3-0 in favor of the home team.
Senior Natalie Halvorson threw a complete game. Halvorson recorded just one strikeout and surrendered eight hits. Halvorson is 1-3 on the season.
DePaul returns to the Ulmer Stadium at 4 p.m. to take on Miami (Ohio) to close out day one of the Cardinal Classic.
