Jake Fuderer tied the match at three with 10 minutes to play but a late Creighton goal led to a 4-3 Blue Demon defeat
OMAHA, Neb. - DePaul men's soccer played an eventful 90 minutes with Creighton on Friday night in Omaha, Neb. but fell victim to a late Bluejay goal, losing the BIG EAST match 4-3. After first-half Blue Demon goals by Jack Richards and Marek Gonda, Jake Fuderer tied the game at three on a penalty kick with just over ten minutes to play. However, Creighton's Duncan McGuire converted the Bluejays' game winner in the 83rd minute.
In the early going, Creighton (5-4, 4-2 BIG EAST) scored in the eighth minute but DePaul (2-5-2, 2-5 BIG EAST) was able to respond quickly. Brayden Callipari sent a long ball from the DePaul backline towards forward Jack Richards who ran onto the ball and knocked it past the Bluejay keeper to tie the match at two. The goal was Richard's second of the season and fourth of his career. By trading quick goals in the opening 15 minutes, the teams set the tone for a match that saw plenty of offensive action and physicality.
The Blue Demons struck again moments later in the 21st minute. Jacob Huth sent a pass forward to Marek Gonda who gathered the ball and tucked a left-footed shot into the net, granting the Blue Demons a 2-1 lead.
After DePaul grabbed the lead, the Bluejays rallied. Creighton scored a pair of goals in the 90 seconds that followed Gonda's goal. The Bluejays converted a penalty kick to tie the game at two before Alejandro Maillet scored quickly after the ensuing kickoff. In the blink of an eye, Creighton held a one-goal advantage with just over 20 minutes to play in the first half. The 3-2 advantage was maintained until the halftime intermission.
After a high-scoring first 45 minutes, the teams settled in defensively in the second half. DePaul attempted to mount a rally to push across the tying goal and in the 79th minute, the Blue Demons were granted a penalty kick after a foul in the box. Jake Fuderer readied with the ball on the spot and calmly deposited a left-footed shot into the back of the net. The goal tied the back-and-forth contest at three.
With time winding down and both sides looking for the winning strike, Creighton connected on a long pass ahead and Duncan McGuire was able to convert for the Bluejays. DePaul pushed forward with time running low and Callipari whipped in a cross that found the head of Gonda but the DePaul freshman's headed attempt found the hands of the Bluejay keeper. Creighton held on to win the eventful affair, 4-3.
