
Blue Demons Fall To Villanova In Elimination Game

DePaul closes out season 25-11
STORRS, Conn. – No. 1 seed DePaul dropped a 9-1 decision to two-seed Villanova on Thursday night in an elimination game at the BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep.
DePaul was tied or within a run of the Wildcats for six innings before Villanova put up seven runs on four hits in the top of the seventh.
A bases loaded walk accounted for the lone DePaul run.
Villanova struck in the top of the first inning after a leadoff walk, single through the left side and a sacrifice fly.
DePaul responded in the bottom half with a trio of two out singles from Jessica Cothern, Gabby O'Riley and Nicole Sullivan to load the bases. Brooke Johnson drew a bases loaded walk to force pinch runner Erin Hocker home and knot the ball game at 1-1.
Both squads went scoreless in innings two, three and four with each side recording just one hit in the span.
Villanova retook a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning on a bases loaded RBI single to third base.
The Wildcats added seven runs in the top of the seventh inning on a two-out grand slam and three-run homer. Villanova drew two walks before the bases were loaded on a DePaul fielding error. Megan Kern sent a ball over the center field wall. After consecutive singles, Ryan Henry sent a three-run homer to left field and widened the lead to 9-1.
DePaul closed out the season 25-11, 13-1 in the BIG EAST and regular season champions. Seniors Pearl Barroso, Jessica Cothern, Krista Dalgarn and Angela Scalzitti wrapped up standout careers in the scarlet and blue.
