Pair of Blue Demons lead DePaul to weekend sweep of Butler
NEW YORK – After a weekend sweep over Butler, DePaul's Krista Dalgarn and Brooke Johnson have earned BIG EAST weekly honors as announced by the conference office on Monday. Dalgarn was tabbed Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season while Johnson was named Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
Dalgarn continued her strong season in the circle for the Blue Demons picking up a win and a save in two appearances on the weekend. The graduate pitcher threw nine scoreless innings and totaled six strikeouts. The Orange, Calif. native recorded her third complete game shutout of the season in DePaul's 2-0 win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader and earned the save in Sunday's 3-1 series finale victory. On the weekend, Dalgarn surrendered just three hits – all singles.
In her fifth year of eligibility, Dalgarn has posted an 11-2 record and is 5-1 in conference play. Dalgarn's 11 wins ranks second in the BIG EAST while her conference-only ERA of 2.18 is good for third behind Villanova's Paige Rauch (1.42) and teammate Natalie Halvorson (1.89). Dalgarn now ranks fifth all-time in program history in career saves with seven.
Johnson turned in big time performances behind the plate in the three-win weekend at Butler. The sophomore first baseman batted .545 on the weekend, while posting three multi-hit games including a double, home run and three RBI. The Chino Hills, Calif. native totaled an on-base percentage of .545 and a .909 slugging percentage while crossing the plate twice. Johnson provided the scoring in DePaul's 2-0 win in game one of Saturday's doubleheader with an RBI single in the fourth inning and solo-home run in the seventh. In a 5-1 game two victory, Johnson brought in an insurance run in the seventh behind a RBI double down the right field line.
2021 has been a breakout season for Johnson, who currently ranks second on the team in batting at .326, hits with 29 and homers with five. Johnson leads the team in RBI with 23 and has taken 51 total bases.
DePaul is 22-9 on the season and finished BIG EAST play 13-1. The Blue Demons have won six in a row and are 15-2 in their last 17 contests.
