DePaul sweeps weekend series with UIC with 4-0 victory
CHICAGO – DePaul swept the weekend series against UIC with a 4-0 victory over the Flames on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Demons picked up their ninth win in a row and closed out their home slate a perfect 10-0 at Cacciatore Stadium.
DePaul (25-9, 13-1 BIG EAST) scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the fourth inning to come out on top over the Flames.
Kate Polucha went two-for-three and tallied two hits and drove in two runs while Jessica Cothern posted an RBI single and Pearl Barroso blasted a solo home run.
Freshman Julyana Gomez threw a complete game shutout to improve to 3-1 on the season.
In the first inning, Angela Scalzitti hit a leadoff infield single before stealing second. Kate Polucha brought Scalzitti across with an RBI double to center. Cothern plated Polucha on an RBI single to make it an early 2-0 ball game.
Barroso blasted a first-pitch home run over the left field wall to widen the advantage to 3-0 in the fourth inning before Polucha sent a single to left field for her second RBI of the day to increase the lead to four.
Gomez retired the final six batters of the contest to keep UIC off the board and secure the complete game win.
DePaul has locked up the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and is set to face Butler on May 13 at 11 a.m. CT with coverage on the BIG EAST Digital Network.
