Match called in the 60th minute due to severe weather
CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer team wrapped up their third and final exhibition game of the 2021 preseason with a win versus Wheaton. With DePaul leading 4-0 in the second half, the match was called due to severe weather in the Lincoln Park area.
After back-and-forth play to begin the match, DePaul was able to break through in the 30th minute. The Blue Demons drew a penalty kick chance when Marek Gonda was fouled in the attacking box. With Jake Fuderer attempting the penalty kick, Wheaton's goalie attempted a diving save. However, Fuderer's shot was tucked into the bottom right corner of the net, giving the Blue Demons a 1-0 advantage.
DePaul's second score of the first half came on an assist from Omar Ramadan to Gonda, who blasted the ball into the bottom left corner of the goal. DePaul entered the break with a 2-0 advantage.
Just two minutes into the second half, DePaul extended the lead. Jack Richards intercepted a pass deep in the attacking zone and executed a quick tap-in. The goal was Richards' second during the 2021 preseason slate.
DePaul was able to strike a fourth time with 32 minutes left in the half. Gonda found the back of the net for the second time of the afternoon after a clean cross from the left wing.
In the 60th minute, play was stopped due to lightning in the area. After a delay, the sides decided to call the match.
