First-half Wildcat goal the difference in Evanston
EVANSTON, Ill. - DePaul women's soccer suffered a 1-0 loss to the Northwestern Wildcats in Evanston, Ill. on Sunday afternoon. Northwestern (4-3) notched a first-half goal that proved to be the difference in the match on the lakefront in Chicago's northern suburb.
DePaul attempted to mount a second-half rally to equalize in the final minutes, but the Wildcat back line held strong, preserving the 1-0 Northwestern win. DePaul has now fallen victim to four consecutive 1-0 defeats and holds a 2-5 after a tough stretch versus quality non-conference opponents.
15 minutes into Sunday's match, Northwestern's Josie Aulicino found free space and tucked a shot past DePaul's Mollie Eriksson. In a relatively uneventful first half outside of the lone Wildcat goal, Northwestern controlled the pace of the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Blue Demons, 6-3.
Trailing by a goal, the Blue Demons attempted to spark the attack in the second half. Meanwhile, the Wildcat offense found space on a few counter-attack opportunities. Eriksson kept the Blue Demons in the match, making three key second-half saves to keep DePaul within striking distance.
With less than 20 minutes to go, Grace Phillpotts sent in a long cross in the direction of Katie Godden. The ball was well-placed to the back post, but Godden was ruled offside to negate the chance.
In the 81st minute, the Blue Demons lined up both a free kick and a corner in the effort to tie the match at one. However, Northwestern was able to successfully deal with both set pieces. With time winding down, DePaul pushed forward with numbers. The Wildcats were able to stifle a DePaul free kick and a Beth Smyth cross in the final minutes to hold on to win 1-0.
