Doubles team advances to ITA Regional quarterfinals and qualifies for ITA Super Regional
URBANA, Ill. – Lenka Antonijevic and Yuliya Kizelbasheva's sense of timing was absolutely exquisite on Saturday.
The talented DePaul doubles team caught fire at just the right time and are now headed to bigger and better things.
After advancing at the competitive Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional hosted by Illinois with a walkover against Chicago State's Katarina Drazic and Kristina Pukhaeva, the Blue Demon duo confronted Michigan's Julia Fliegner and Merri Kelly.
The Wolverines were at match point when Antonijevic and Kizelbasheva channeled their inner resolve and persevered to a dramatic 8-7(5) comeback victory.
Not only did it launch these women's tennis standouts into Sunday's quarterfinals, but more importantly it qualified them for the ITA Super Regional Oct. 22-25 in Columbus, Ohio.
"We came here to qualify for the super regional and establish ourselves as one of the best in the region," said DePaul coach Maris Arce. "I'm so proud of Lenka and Yuliya for showing great energy, discipline and commitment throughout every point of the match.
"Even being down match point, they showed grit and continued to play to win. The pair we faced from Michigan came at us and we never backed down."
Arce's tandem will face Wisconsin's Antonela Stoica and Alina Mukhortova in Sunday's quarterfinal round. The other quarterfinal in the bracket pairs the Illini's Kasia Treiber and Kida Ferrari against Northwestern's Sydney Pratt and Hannah McColgan.
