DePaul held scoreless in the BIG EAST/Big Ten matchup
ANN ARBOR, Mich. - DePaul women's soccer was held scoreless in a 1-0 loss to the No. 24 Michigan Wolverines on Sunday in Ann Arbor, Mich. Michigan, who improved to 5-1, kept pressure on the DePaul defense all afternoon and a first-half goal by Nicki Hernandez was the difference in the non-conference matchup.
Â
DePaul goalkeeper Mollie Eriksson had to settle in right away, turning away multiple key Wolverine chances in the opening minutes. Eriksson finished with a total of nine saves in the match.
Â
With just over ten minutes gone, Grace Phillpotts fired a shot from outside the box that sailed just over the crossbar. Playing in her home state, Phillpotts managed the left midfield up and down the field all afternoon. Phillpotts and many of the DePaul starters played the entire 90 minutes.
Â
Michigan broke the scoreless tie on a goal by Nicki Hernandez in the 33rd minute. Hernandez found the ball with space on the left side of the box and fired a quick shot past Eriksson. Another Wolverine chance deflected off of the goalpost with less than five minutes remaining in the first half.
Â
DePaul pushed for the equalizer in the second half, but Michigan kept up their offensive pressure as well. Eriksson made six saves in the period's first 30 minutes. On the attacking end with 13 minutes remaining, the Blue Demons swung in a dangerous ball but Morgan Turner came up just short on an attempted header.Â
Â
A Megan Malecha cross off of a free kick was turned away with less than two minutes remaining and the Wolverines held off the Blue Demons to win 1-0. The win was the fifth of the season for 24th-ranked Michigan while the Blue Demons fell to 2-3.
KEY STATS
DePaul returns to Lincoln Park to host the Loyola Ramblers on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Blue Demons will then head north to Evanston, Ill. to face the Northwestern Wildcats on Sunday at 3p.m.
