Cruz Named to BIG EAST Honor Roll

Cruz helped the Blue Demons shut out Wisconsin in 1-0 win on Sunday
CHICAGO - DePaul men's soccer goalkeeper Gandhi Cruz was named to the BIG EAST honor roll on Monday after helping shutout the Wisconsin Badgers in a 1-0 win on Sunday afternoon. Cruz made a career-high six saves in the win, which was one of two victories this week for the Blue Demons.
Cruz, who took over for graduating mainstay keeper Drew Nuelle, has started each of DePaul's three matches this season. After a season-opening loss to Loyola, Cruz limited the St. Thomas Tommies to one goal on Thursday before shutting out the Badgers on Sunday.
In Sunday's match in Madison, Cruz made six saves including a handful on dangerous Badger chances. In the first half, Cruz made an outstretched save coming across the front of the goal to keep the game scoreless. Eventually, DePaul's Jack Richards found the back of the net on a free kick and the DePaul defense hung on to win 1-0.
Cruz is the first DePaul goalkeeper to earn a conference award since Nuelle was tabbed to the honor roll after a 0-0 2OT draw versus Loyola on Feb. 21 last season.

DePaul hits the road again this Friday to take on Bradley in Peoria, Ill. The Blue Demons will return to Wish Field in Lincoln Park to host UIC on Wednesday, Sept. 15.
