DePaul Clashes With Marquette on Wednesday Night
1/11/2022 3:13:00 PM | WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
BIG EAST-leading Blue Demons seek ninth win in last 10 games
CHICAGO – Describing the basketball feud between DePaul and Marquette as the Hatfields and McCoys is probably an overstatement, but actually there is no love lost between these proud, traditional athletic programs in the heart of the Midwest.
They simply enjoy beating one another, and have so for a long, long time.
The men's basketball rivalry goes all the way back to the 1917-18 season---10 years before the "Murderers Row" of the 1927 Yankees led by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig.
The women's basketball rivalry in which DePaul enjoys a 47-29 advantage dates back to Feb. 23, 1978.
But remember, Title IX had not become law until 1972, paving the way for women's hoops at DePaul in 1974.
Passions will become inflamed once again as the women's version of this hardwood conflict tips off at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Al McGuire Center in Milwaukee.
This comes practically 24 hours after the men's teams squared off Tuesday night at Fiserv Forum.
Emotions are often at a regular-season peak when DePaul and Marquette collide. The Blue Demons enter Wednesday's game atop the BIG EAST standings with a perfect 4-0 mark.
The Golden Eagles would like nothing better than to stick the Chicago team with its first conference loss.
Count on coach Doug Bruno and his ace coaching staff to have Sonya Morris, Lexi Held, Deja Church & Co. primed and ready for a heated, intense, action-packed 40 minutes.
DePaul (12-3, 4-0) comes into the 77th renewal of this rivalry as the most dangerous offense in the country, averaging 92.1 points a game which is tops in NCAA Division I.
In their last eight games, the Blue Demons have reached the century mark four times and are averaging 99 points. The next time they see triple digits beside their name will set a season record with seven games of 100 or more.
All five starters average in double figures, and when Bruno's beloved "DePaulball" is operating at peak efficiency---all five starters are sharing the ball and shooting the lights out.
Twice this season, the First Five all finished in double figures with each of Morris, Held, Church, Darrione Rogers and freshman phenom Aneesah Morrow shooting 50 percent or better.
Like a prize thoroughbred bolting out of the starting gate, DePaul will set a fast pace early and speed the game up at every opportunity.
More often than not, possessions wind up in a half-court setting. That's when you'll hear Bruno beseeching his players to move the ball (whether by dribble or pass) and cut to score. His team can burn you from long distance or catch you off-balance with backdoor layups.
Together, BIG EAST three-point leader Held and Rogers have combined for 64 swishes from behind the arc. Morris, Church and top reserves Dee Bekelja and Kierra Collier combine for 52 more long-distance connections.
The accuracy can be unnerving for an opposing coach. Collier is converting at a 46.2 percent rate followed by Held (44.7%) and Rogers (43.5%). Stretching a defense more than 22 feet frees up plenty of space for slashes to the rim.
It's no wonder DePaul leads the country in scoring and assists with a power rebounder like Morrow cleaning up on all the misses. The 6-foot, 1-inch rookie is second in the nation in total rebounds and third in offensive rebounds per game.
Marquette (9-4, 2-2) will attack its I-94 rival with a trio of double-figure scorers led by Lauren Van Kleunen at 13.2 points a game. Backing her up are sharpshooter Karissa McLaughlin (12.4 points) who transferred from Purdue and point guard Jordan King (11.9 points). Chloe Marotta and Liza Karlen can also do plenty of damage.
McLaughlin fits the mold of a Bruno three-point threat, having knocked down 31 of her 71 attempts from deep. The rest of the Golden Eagles have combined for nine baskets beyond the arc.
This will be quite a backboard challenge for Morrow and her teammates as the Golden Eagles are outrebounding their opponents by an average of 42.5-31.9 per game.
