
DePaul Comes Up Short Against No. 20 Xavier

David Jones led the Blue Demons with 26 points on Wednesday night
CHICAGO – DePaul led throughout the game, but the bid for the win on the final possession didn't connect for the Blue Demons in a 68-67 loss against No. 20/20 Xavier. David Jones paced the Blue Demons with 26 points and Brandon Johnson added 13 with eight rebounds.
Jones led the charge early by scoring 20 points in the first half as the Blue Demons led, 36-34, at intermission. He opened the game by scoring nine of the DePaul's first 15 points. Johnson joined Jones with a pair of three-pointers and his second trifecta gave the Blue Demons a 15-7 advantage less than six minutes into the game.
DePaul took its largest lead of the on a Jones layup midway through the first half. That bucket gave the Blue Demons a 29-17 lead, but Xavier answered with 12 straight points and tied the score at 29-29 with just over four minutes until halftime.
The tie was short-lived as Johnson sank a 15-footer and Jones drilled his fourth three of the first half on back-to-back possessions.
DePaul (10-7, 1-6 BIG EAST) stretched the lead back to double figures and led 50-40 on Johnson's third three-pointer of the game at the 14:13 mark, but like in the first half Xavier charged back with nine straight points to close the gap before DePaul answered again and built a six-point cushion on a Nick Ongenda dunk with 5:50 left in the game.
Xavier (14-3, 4-2 BIG EAST) continued to chip away and tied the game at 65-65 on a Jack Nunge three-pointer with 2:35 on the clock. Nunge led the Musketeers with 23 points.
The final minutes saw Nunge score in the lane and hit a free throw while Terry knocked down a pull-up jumper. On DePaul's final possession, Jones found Terry in the corner, but his attempt at the game winner didn't connect and Xavier held on for the 68-67 final.
Jones added five rebounds to his game-high total while Yor Anei grabbed 10 rebounds to go with four points and three blocked shots. Terry finished with nine points, eight assists and three rebounds and Ongenda added eight points and five boards.
The Blue Demons go on the road for three of their next four games starting Saturday at Creighton. The Blue Demons and Bluejays are scheduled for a 4:30 p.m. start on CBS Sport Network and WIND (560 AM). Following a game at Villanova on Jan. 25, DePaul returns to Wintrust Arena on Saturday, Jan. 29 to face Connecticut on Blue Demon Day.
