Blue Demons' BIG EAST game televised nationally on CBS Sports Network
CINCINNATI – In a town consumed by its beloved Bengals battling AFC No. 1 seed Tennessee late Saturday afternoon in the Divisional Round, DePaul made plans to keep its offensive juggernaut rolling.
The grand design of coach Doug Bruno is to lead the nation in assists every year. Past the midpoint of this season, the Blue Demons lead the country in scoring offense and assists.
They will step onto the Cintas Center court for a BIG EAST matchup with Xavier on Sunday coming off back-to-back 100-point games. Triple digits on Sunday would equal a program record of three such games in a row set Dec. 14-19 of this season.
A CBS Sports Network national TV audience is anticipating another highly entertaining production from a women's basketball program that has put up triple digits in a school-record eight games.
In their last two games, Bruno & Co. have beaten Georgetown 102-69 and Butler 103-69. In their initial encounter with Xavier back on Dec. 5, the Wintrust Arena scoreboard read: DePaul 103, Xavier 85.
The Blue Demons (15-4, 7-1 BIG EAST) prefer to play the game at light speed with so many moving pieces scrambling an opponent's rhythm and composure.
For example, Butler scored the first five points on Friday night only to see the visiting team go on a 17-4 tear. DePaul closed out the third quarter scoring 18 points in a row. Calling a timeout, adjusting strategy---nothing seemed to matter.
Freshman phenom Amarah Coleman who leads the nation in double-doubles was money down low. Kierra Collier was deadly from outside.
And Deja Church was scoring from everywhere in between.
Together, that Blue Demon trio shot a combined 24-of-33 which comes to 73 percent.
Speeding up the tempo while on defense, DePaul's variety of presses forced 22 Bulldog turnovers leading to 31 points.
Setting the tone for a team averaging nearly 92 points a game is Morrow with averages of 19.7 points and 12.4 rebounds.
Sonya Morris is putting up 17.5 points a game and is followed by Church at 14.3, point guard Lexi Held at 14.2 points per game and Darrione Rogers with 10.5 points.
Run those figures through a calculator and Bruno's starting five is averaging 76.2 points a game.
Xavier comes into Sunday having lost its last four games, although three of them came against the BIG EAST's upper tier of Creighton, Connecticut and Marquette.
Nia Clark leads the Musketeers averaging 12.8 points a game followed by Kaelynn Satterfield with 10 points and 7.1 rebounds a game.
