Title IX, the federal civil rights law that prohibits sex-based discrimination in any educational institution that receives federal funding, was enacted on June 23, 1972 and gave women many more opportunities to play sports at the collegiate level.
DePaul laid the foundation for success in women's sports in 1974 when women's volleyball, basketball and tennis were introduced as intercollegiate sports with the help of physical education professor Jean Nordberg. Softball was introduced in 1977 and Cross Country/Track & Field in 1982. Women's soccer played its first season in 1996.
Title IX Crowdfunding
DePaul Athletics is kicking off a crowdfunding effort to recognize and celebrate the impact of Title IX on Blue Demon Athletics. Alumni, donors and friends are asked to invest in DePaul's women's athletics by directly supporting their favorite program through the University's crowdfunding platform at inspire.depaul.edu/TitleIX.
Donors can select donation levels with special benefits which fit the impact they wish to make. The initiative will feature special giving levels to recognize the impact of the ground-breaking legislation.
